CD11b (Integrin αM) is a key subunit of the heterodimeric integrin Mac-1 (αMβ2, CD11b/CD18), primarily expressed on the surface of immune cells including neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, myeloid-derived suppressor cells, and natural killer cells. It plays critical roles in both innate and adaptive immunity by mediating cell adhesion, migration, and phagocytosis. As a receptor for iC3b and various extracellular matrix proteins, CD11b facilitates the phagocytosis of opsonized particles and pathogens. It also regulates leukocyte extravasation by binding to intercellular adhesion molecules on activated endothelial cells, thereby modulating inflammatory responses, cellular chemotaxis, and immune surveillance. Dysregulation of CD11b is implicated in chronic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and cancer progression, making it a significant biomarker and potential therapeutic target in immunology research.
