CK19 (Cytokeratin 19) is a type I acidic cytokeratin with a molecular weight of approximately 40 kDa. It is expressed in various simple and stratified epithelia, including those in the gastrointestinal tract, lung, breast, and biliary system. CK19 is widely used as a sensitive tumor marker in clinical diagnostics, particularly for detecting circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and micrometastases in cancers such as breast, colorectal, pancreatic, and lung carcinomas. Due to its epithelial specificity and stability, CK19 serves as a key target in immunohistochemistry and liquid biopsy assays, aiding in cancer diagnosis, prognosis assessment, and treatment monitoring. Its expression is also studied in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and tumor progression, highlighting its relevance in both pathology and cancer biology research.
