IL-10 (Interleukin-10) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine produced by various immune cells, including regulatory T cells (Tregs), M2 macrophages, dendritic cells, B cells, and certain T helper subsets. It signals through a receptor complex composed of IL-10R1 and IL-10R2, activating downstream pathways that suppress pro-inflammatory cytokine production, inhibit antigen presentation, and limit excessive immune activation.
As a key mediator of immune tolerance and homeostasis, IL-10 plays a critical role in preventing autoimmunity, controlling inflammatory responses, and resolving tissue damage. Dysregulation of IL-10 is implicated in chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, persistent infections, and cancer progression. In therapeutic contexts, recombinant IL-10 or IL-10-modulating strategies are being explored for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, and other immune-mediated conditions. Additionally, its role in tumor microenvironment modulation makes it a focus in oncology and immunotherapy research.
