IL-3 (Interleukin-3), also known as multi-colony stimulating factor (multi-CSF), is a hematopoietic cytokine primarily produced by activated T cells, mast cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. It supports the proliferation, differentiation, and survival of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells and progenitor cells across myeloid lineages, including granulocytes, monocytes, megakaryocytes, and erythrocytes.
By promoting the expansion of myeloid and lymphoid populations, IL-3 enhances immune responses, particularly during infection and inflammation. It also contributes to allergic responses by supporting mast cell and basophil growth and activation. Clinically, dysregulated IL-3 signaling has been implicated in certain hematologic malignancies, such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML). While recombinant IL-3 has been investigated for its potential to accelerate hematopoietic recovery after chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation, its therapeutic use remains limited.
