IL-4 (Interleukin-4) is a key pleiotropic cytokine primarily produced by activated T helper 2 (Th2) cells, mast cells, basophils, and eosinophils. It plays a central role in regulating immune responses by promoting Th2 cell differentiation, B cell class switching to IgE production, and alternative activation of macrophages (M2 polarization). IL-4 also contributes to anti-inflammatory responses, tissue repair, and allergic inflammation. Clinically, dysregulated IL-4 signaling is associated with allergic diseases such as asthma and atopic dermatitis, as well as certain autoimmune and parasitic infections. Due to its immunomodulatory functions, IL-4 is a significant target for therapeutic interventions in allergy and immune-mediated disorders, and recombinant IL-4 is utilized in research to study Th2 biology and humoral immunity.
