P53 is a tumor suppressor protein encoded by the TP53 gene, often referred to as the “guardian of the genome” due to its critical role in maintaining genomic stability. It functions primarily as a transcription factor that responds to various cellular stresses—such as DNA damage, hypoxia, or oncogene activation—by regulating the expression of genes involved in cell cycle arrest, DNA repair, senescence, and apoptosis. By preventing the proliferation of damaged or abnormal cells, p53 plays a central role in suppressing tumor development.
