S100β, a member of the S100 protein family, is a low-molecular-weight calcium-binding protein primarily expressed and secreted by astrocytes in the central nervous system. It plays a multifaceted role in intracellular and extracellular signaling, regulating processes such as cell proliferation, cytoskeleton dynamics, energy metabolism, and calcium homeostasis. While it contributes to neurotrophic and neuroprotective functions under physiological conditions, elevated levels of S100β in serum or cerebrospinal fluid are closely associated with central nervous system injury, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, and neurodegenerative disorders. Clinically, S100β is widely used as a sensitive biomarker for brain damage assessment, prognosis evaluation, and monitoring of neurological conditions.
